Jean-Paul Baudoin

Outsider art: painting, sculpture, murals

Rue des Sept-Maries, Trentemoult, 44400 Rezé

The son of a butcher on place Delorme in Nantes, Jean-Paul Baudoin was already drawing on the shop's wrapping paper. Born in 1946 and self-taught, he became a potter, reproducing 'vieux Quimper' ware, until outsider art opened another world for him. Since 1991 he has painted pagan goddesses (Isis, Ishtar, Ana), fairies, mermaids, unicorns and Arthurian heroes on cardboard and recycled paper, and welded old tools into brightly coloured sculptures. In Trentemoult, his house on rue des Sept-Maries has become the work itself: murals, totems, and, at the neighbours' request, a decoration that spills onto their façades. He calls himself a 'fetish-shaman', busy re-enchanting everyday life. He has shown his work at home since 1987, joined the collection of the Musée de la Création Franche in Bègles in 1992, and his works are also shown at the Collection de l'Art Brut in Lausanne. In 2012 he opened his studio for the Parcours des créateurs.

Some works are sold through Galerie Tramway (Amboise) and Crozon antiques; studio visits by appointment.
