Daniel Le Saux

Painting, assemblage ('boat skins')

Allée Choëmet, Trentemoult, 44400 Rezé (atelier)

Studio on allée Choëmet; Amis des enfants du monde charity sale at the Maison des Isles (2024 and earlier years).

Born in Quimper in 1963, Daniel Le Saux trained as a hydrobiologist: working on the marine environment, he began picking up fish bones, gloves, buoys and cans on the shore and turning them into 'pictures' somewhere between painting, sculpture and collage. Since then he has mostly worked with 'boat skins', the layers of paint that build up on hulls, which he collects in boat graveyards and careening yards such as Léchiagat, then heats and cuts out. In small glazed boxes, modern maritime ex-votos, laid-back fishermen carry giant tuna and fish fly over the boats: humour and poetry, with an undertow about fishermen who must sail ever further for ever smaller fish. Based in Trentemoult, where he shares the allée Choëmet studio with his partner, the painter Charlotte Madézo, he has shown at the Vieux phare in Penmarc'h (2014) and in Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez (2020), and has taken part for several years in the Amis des enfants du monde charity sale at the Maison des Isles.
