After the festive season, mountains of oyster, scallop and mussel shells are thrown away: 250,000 tonnes a year in France. In 2020, Morgan Guyader, a graduate of the École de design Nantes Atlantique, imagined turning them into a material: 60% crushed shells, stone and a little glue. His company Malakio, created with childhood friend Hugo Kermarrec, moved in late 2022 to a 320 m² workshop on the Haute-Île. There it handcrafts coasters, trays, candle holders and mirrors, without firing and with little water. Restaurants, including the starred Les Cadets in Nantes, appreciate the sustainable design.
